Notable Links for 03/01
Before we get started today, I'd like to take a moment to correct a mistake a made in Friday's "Notable Links". The Igor Kordey interview was mistakenly attributed to Silver Bullet Comics and not Newsarama, the folks who actually did the interview. Don't really know how that happened, but I'm glad the matter was brought to my attention. I'd like to thank the folks at Silver Bullet Comics, especially Mr. Tim O'Shea, for being such good sports about this.

Anyway, on with the show.
* "Quebec cartoonist and illustrator Albert Chartier was buried yesterday in St. Jean de Matha, the small town near Joliette that was his home and the setting for his beloved comic strip Onésime for more than half a century." More accolades for late Canadian cartoonist Albert Chartier (who I think I mistakenly referred to as Arthur last week) here, courtesy of The Montreal Gazette.
* In what has to be a first for the American comics industry, a calm and civil complaint over perceived censorious behavior by newbie Manga publisher Del Rey has resulted in, gasp, the reversal of said censorious behavior. Seems they were planning on inserting some innocuous towels to protect American audiences from the scourge of bared breasts in Ken Akamatsu's "Negima". Its as close to a no-brianer as you can get.

Notable Links for 02/25
* OK, first the big news that everyone probably already knows: the Good Guys Won.

Hopefully this is going to be a slow news day? I'm hoping? Pretty please?
* SPX (the Small Press Expo) and ICAF (the International Comics Arts Festival) are reunited. Like peanut butter and jelly, they just didn't make much sense apart. Read the press release here, courtesy of Comic Book Resources.

* Igor Kordey has been fired as the artist of Marvel's 'Excalibur' relaunch. Condolences to Kordy - it seems like Marvel has been treating him particularly shoddy over this. Unfortunately, the chances of a fan boycott are slim to nil, seeing as how Kordy is not a fan favorite among the fanboys. I can't begin to describe just how soul-deadeningly evil it seems to me to see folks rejoice over someone - with a family, no less - being fired (someone who, from all appearances, did not commit any malfeasance or do his job badly, that is). Oddly enough, the whole thing seems to have evolved into a rather bizarre debate on whether or not the blogosphere practices "groupthink" or not - in all honesty, I'm really not quite sure I have the interest in grokking all the different sides in this debate. It all just sort of seems silly, an opinion which Neilaien more or less shares with me. No offense, guys, but all things considered I can think of a great many better things to do than argue about the deep philosophical questions of blogging. In fact, I daresay that if I ever really felt the need to debate these things on any meaningful level, I'd pull the plug on my computer and take up macrame.
So, that's me for today. How's about you?

* Québécoise cartoonist Albert Chartier has died. The only story I was able to find on this passing was this one. If I see another obituary in the coming week I will link to that as well.
* "Reporters Without Borders strongly protested after [Algerian] imams attacked journalists on the independent French-language press as 'apostates' and 'enemies of Islam', singling out cartoonist Ali Dilem of the daily Liberté.
"Several imams called for a boycott of these newspapers during Friday prayers on 20 February. They accused them of sowing discord (fitna) within the community of believers. * Former Marvel Comics CFO David Fremed has resigned from his position as CFO of Atari. Its an interesting interview, and a surprisingly candid one as well - although, it must be noted, Levitz is infinitely more nuanced in what he chooses to say and how to say it than any of his counterparts at Marvel - he manages to give the illusion of candor in some places where he's really not saying much at all. * So Rich Johnston weighs in on the Image coup de'tat in this week's Lying in the Gutters, but doesn't have much more to add to what Newsarama already said. Letters, We Get Letters, We Get Sacks and Sacks of Letters
In case some of you weren’t aware, I do some writing for The Comics Journal occasionally. The recently released issue #258 features a review I wrote for Grant Morrison’s recent Vertigo series “The Filth”. I was quite pleased with how that review came out. It was originally a lot shorter, but when Milo George saw just how impressed I was with the book he offered me the chance to expand on some of my ideas. I did, and I think that of all the pieces I’ve had in the Journal to date it’s the one I’m most happy with. Credit where credit is due – it wouldn’t have been half of what it is without Mr. George’s help.
Anyway, I recently received an e-mail from a fellow named David Fiore in response to this review. In case you’ve never heard of the fellow, he runs his own blog, Motime Like The Present, which has to be one of the more intelligent and literate blogs you’re likely to find. But, he had some issues with my review, and I thought it best to answer some of his critiques in this forum.
”I wrote about your piece on Motime Like The Present yesterday--and then it occurred to me: you probably have never read my blog, because when I write about comics, I always write about the s-h's...
“Fair's fair and I wanted to give you a chance to respond, if you are so inclined:
“The "Firing Line" section features a review of Morrison's The Filth, by Tim O’Neil. Now, I'm in no position to debate the merits of that series (I'm "waiting for the trade"), but that's not particularly important, in this case, because O'Neil spends about 50% of the article whining ADD-style about the perils and temptations that comics-writers must face (awww!) and the baleful influence of superheroes in general.
“What are we to do with this statement?
“’The problem with mainstream comics is not that superheroes are somehow inherently bad, but that they are inherently uninteresting.’
“Send for a doctor? Or just laugh?
“Rose @ Pieratikos has noted that:
[Super-heroes] are perfect metaphors for a lot of things, which I find so fascinating. I think it’s that lack of specificity, lack of groundedness that lets people make whatever identifications they want. (ah, but you are above the herd of fools who go in for that sort of nonsense, aren't you? fine--although that makes you a kind of superman yourself...)
“And it only gets worse, 'cause after delivering this impassioned plea on the behalf of ‘talented’ writers reduced to the indignity of producing "hackwork" in order to feed themselves, he proceeds to damn Animal Man with faint praise! Tim, could you please tell me, precisely, what is ‘jejune’ and ‘cloying’ in Morrison's ‘exploration of the nature of morality and love’? We can fight about this if you wanna!”
Well, I don’t really want to fight, no, because I think there’s a lot of room here for reasonable people to disagree. I’m not offended by your viewpoint – even if I don’t agree with a lot of it.
I would like to first disabuse you of the notion that I dislike superheroes. Although I am very harsh on the genre in my critical capacity, I do still get a lot of enjoyment out of them. I grew up living, breathing and sleeping the damn things. I never really stopped loving them – I’m just not about to let my admitted affection for the genre overwhelm what I consider to be my reasonable critical faculty.
Is this disingenuous on my part? I don’t think so. Honestly, everyone has their own particular “guilty pleasures” – something they consume even know they know its not really that good for them. The only difference is, I don’t feel particularly guilty about buying and reading some superhero books. I’m not going to lie to myself about the genre’s limitations, however, just because I get a kick out of reading them.
I’ll agree with you that superheroes are metaphors, at least at their roots. Sometimes these metaphors can even be harnessed to the service of a good story – but most of the time these metaphors go unobserved. And I also think that because of the simplistic nature of morality in most superhero books, these metaphors just don’t stand up to a rigorous scrutiny.
Or, to put it another way: it sounds as if you’re saying that the ideas behind superheroes are more interesting than the superheroes themselves. I can understand this. Captain America is, to use an easy and fairly uncontroversial example - a metaphor for American political mores in turbulent times, and Captain America’s attitudes have changed to reflect similar dynamic changes in our country and our world in the forty or so years since he’s been resurrected. (I think his first run during WWII can be dismissed, in this context, as propaganda.) But when you have Captain America fighting Batroc, its just not a metaphor for anything so much as, um, just two guys wailing on each other. I think when all is said and done the metaphorical underpinnings for these characters are basically superfluous to the main reason they exist – to fight each other, to look cool, and to, nowadays, hopefully graduate to a major motion picture and Underoos. But mostly to fight each other.
Because the thing that gets to me about superheroes is that, ultimately, they're just inherently stupid. You can hem and haw all day about their metaphorical underpinnings but at the end of the day they’re too detached from reality to really say anything significant. People don’t dress in funny costumes and run around on rooftops beating each other up – they don’t gain superpowers and devote themselves to the common good – they don’t form clubs and societies to combat evil scientists and giant purple starfish. None of these things (especially the damn purple starfishes) have any bearing or relation to reality as we know it.
The best science-fiction and fantasy stories can approach the most bizarre and unbelievable situations and imbue them with plausibility through psychological depth. Failing that (as is the case with Tolkien) writers can suspend disbelief by creating a plausible alternative to conventional psychological and societal mechanisms. Superheroes just don’t work when you look at them too closely because they supposedly inhabit a world very similar to our own. The only reason the stories work at all at this point is through the virtue of a Byzantine series of genre conventions, ossified and hardened by generations of recycling, and increasingly incoherent to the uninitiated.
Like I say, If I want to sit down and read the latest issue of the Fantastic Four (which I just did, actually) I can put on my reader’s hat and enjoy the hell out of it. But I can’t sit here in a serious discussion of aesthetics and tell you that the books holds up at anything above the level of a soap opera or action movie - because it doesn’t.
So, yes, from a critical and aesthetic standpoint, I do believe superheroes are inherently uninteresting. Do my opinions count for much? Not really, and especially not when you look at how popular superheroes are right now (ironically, in just about every medium except comics). But there you go. You may find them fascinating on many deep and meaningful levels, but I do not. I’m going to read them and enjoy them but I’m not going to spend any longer than I have to analyzing them because I just don’t believe they can hold up to that kind of scrutiny.
(I should note that there are obvious exceptions, there are a few superhero books that I do believe hold up to this kind of critical scrutiny. I just discussed the Milligan/Allred ‘X-Force’ a few days back, for example, which I absolutely adored and think will come to be regarded as one of the highlights of best comics in years. But . . . how many ‘Dark Knight Returns’ are published every year? I think Morrison does some interesting things with the genre, and Alan Moore’s ABC books are very good, but in terms of real critical meat that’s, what, 1 or 2% of the mainstream industries output? Most of it is stupid people in tights hitting each other... you can see why my expectations are low.)
I think anyone who sits down to write a superhero story should take a long and hard look at just what it is that makes the genre so hidebound, so calcified and almost decrepit in its mannerisms and its conventions. After so much water has been under the bridge, it seems that it almost takes a genius to find some new life in the genre, to find stories tell that need telling as superhero stories, that take advantage of those things the genre can do that no other genre can. Take the unreality, take the genre conventions and use them to tell a story that is uniquely suited to exploit these limited restrictions. It’s not impossible – but as I said in the Journal the amount of effort almost makes you think it isn’t worth the while. That’s what makes superheroes uninteresting.
If you want to write a story about saving the whales, why not just write a story about whales and not about Superman saving the whales? If you want to write a story about the inefficiencies of the criminal justice system, write a courtroom drama without men in red tights beating up ninjas. By injecting the spandex into these situations you also inject too many distracting and disorienting elements to keep your original message intact.
So many superheroes are uninteresting because they exist only to propagate trademarks. For the most part the most interesting and essential work on any given character is done by the people who create him – because the understand what he’s all about, they understand the metaphors they drive the conflict and fuel the drama. In a perfect world, Spider-Man would have ceased publishing when Ditko left – because while there’s been some nice work done in the intervening years none of it has held a candle to Lee & Ditko’s in terms of the sheer simplicity and unadorned efficiency of their model. Spider-Man is basically uninteresting to me now because I’ve read Lee & Ditko’s – everything else might as well be fanfic because they’ll never be able to capture that spark again.
Man, where was I?
Oh yeah. I recognize that a great many people can wax poetic about superheroes, can write some pretty interesting stuff on the genre when they want to – but most of it just seems kinda silly to me. I mean, if you want to talk about how great Mozart sounds on the kazoo, you’re perfectly entitled to so, but I’m also entitled to think you’re rather missing the point. Mozart on kazoos might be fun for a lark, but its just kinda silly on the face of it. Even if 90% of all the records in the store became kazoo music, it wouldn’t change the fact that the kazoo is an instrument with an extremely limited range. There are a few things that the kazoo can do, true, but the kazoo just looks silly trying to play Mozart or Back or the Beatles or even Slipknot. And just because everyone is playing the kazoo doesn’t mean that I’m going to change my own standards to reflect this – I’m no Objectivist but I’ll stand by my own perceptions in the face of popular scorn for as long as you care to scorn me.
And as for “Animal Man”, well, I quite liked the series. But again, I find myself wondering what someone as talented as Morrison could have done if he hadn’t had to channel what was, at its core, a very sweet and honest story about personal loss through the filter of a third-tier DC superhero book. I’m not going to say that he should have written a straight autobiographical story or anything like that – but it seems odd that he should have used that particular platform for that particular message. But, then again, Morrison’s work has always managed to use the unique aspects of the genre to tell interesting stories – as I said – so I can’t really complain about that part of it.
No, the parts of “Animal Man” that didn’t quite ring true were, from a craft standpoint, the parts where Morrison’s reach clearly exceeded his grasp. Its all in the eye of the beholder – one man’s jejune is another man’s profound – but, for instance, the part in the last issue with the flashlights on the hills just seemed forced and manipulative. Purely from a mechanical standpoint, it was an obvious and derivative mechanism that made me cringe when I read it the first time. By now, though, Morrison has mostly outgrown these types of gaffes, but it still reads like the work of a young man – a talented, passionate and worldly young man – but still a young man.

And that, as they say, is that – I really had no desire to write this much but that’s pretty much the story of my life. Maybe I’ll post a review or something tomorrow – maybe not – but at least you can expect the linkblogging to resume on Monday.

In case you’ve never heard of the fellow, he runs his own blog, Motime Like The Present, which has to be one of the more intelligent and literate blogs you’re likely to find. But, he had some issues with my review, and I thought it best to answer some of his critiques in this forum.

“The "Firing Line" section features a review of Morrison's The Filth, by Tim O’Neil. Now, I'm in no position to debate the merits of that series (I'm "waiting for the trade"), but that's not particularly important, in this case, because O'Neil spends about 50% of the article whining ADD-style about the perils and temptations that comics-writers must face (awww!) and the baleful influence of superheroes in general.

Well, I don’t really want to fight, no, because I think there’s a lot of room here for reasonable people to disagree. I’m not offended by your viewpoint – even if I don’t agree with a lot of it.
I would like to first disabuse you of the notion that I dislike superheroes. Although I am very harsh on the genre in my critical capacity, I do still get a lot of enjoyment out of them. I grew up living, breathing and sleeping the damn things. I never really stopped loving them – I’m just not about to let my admitted affection for the genre overwhelm what I consider to be my reasonable critical faculty.
Is this disingenuous on my part? I don’t think so. Honestly, everyone has their own particular “guilty pleasures” – something they consume even know they know its not really that good for them. The only difference is, I don’t feel particularly guilty about buying and reading some superhero books. I’m not going to lie to myself about the genre’s limitations, however, just because I get a kick out of reading them.
I’ll agree with you that superheroes are metaphors, at least at their roots. Sometimes these metaphors can even be harnessed to the service of a good story – but most of the time these metaphors go unobserved. And I also think that because of the simplistic nature of morality in most superhero books, these metaphors just don’t stand up to a rigorous scrutiny.
Or, to put it another way: it sounds as if you’re saying that the ideas behind superheroes are more interesting than the superheroes themselves. I can understand this. Captain America is, to use an easy and fairly uncontroversial example - a metaphor for American political mores in turbulent times, and Captain America’s attitudes have changed to reflect similar dynamic changes in our country and our world in the forty or so years since he’s been resurrected. (I think his first run during WWII can be dismissed, in this context, as propaganda.) But when you have Captain America fighting Batroc, its just not a metaphor for anything so much as, um, just two guys wailing on each other. I think when all is said and done the metaphorical underpinnings for these characters are basically superfluous to the main reason they exist – to fight each other, to look cool, and to, nowadays, hopefully graduate to a major motion picture and Underoos. But mostly to fight each other.
Because the thing that gets to me about superheroes is that, ultimately, they're just inherently stupid. You can hem and haw all day about their metaphorical underpinnings but at the end of the day they’re too detached from reality to really say anything significant. People don’t dress in funny costumes and run around on rooftops beating each other up – they don’t gain superpowers and devote themselves to the common good – they don’t form clubs and societies to combat evil scientists and giant purple starfish. None of these things (especially the damn purple starfishes) have any bearing or relation to reality as we know it.
The best science-fiction and fantasy stories can approach the most bizarre and unbelievable situations and imbue them with plausibility through psychological depth. Failing that (as is the case with Tolkien) writers can suspend disbelief by creating a plausible alternative to conventional psychological and societal mechanisms. Superheroes just don’t work when you look at them too closely because they supposedly inhabit a world very similar to our own. The only reason the stories work at all at this point is through the virtue of a Byzantine series of genre conventions, ossified and hardened by generations of recycling, and increasingly incoherent to the uninitiated.
Like I say, If I want to sit down and read the latest issue of the Fantastic Four (which I just did, actually) I can put on my reader’s hat and enjoy the hell out of it. But I can’t sit here in a serious discussion of aesthetics and tell you that the books holds up at anything above the level of a soap opera or action movie - because it doesn’t.
So, yes, from a critical and aesthetic standpoint, I do believe superheroes are inherently uninteresting. Do my opinions count for much? Not really, and especially not when you look at how popular superheroes are right now (ironically, in just about every medium except comics). But there you go. You may find them fascinating on many deep and meaningful levels, but I do not. I’m going to read them and enjoy them but I’m not going to spend any longer than I have to analyzing them because I just don’t believe they can hold up to that kind of scrutiny.
(I should note that there are obvious exceptions, there are a few superhero books that I do believe hold up to this kind of critical scrutiny. I just discussed the Milligan/Allred ‘X-Force’ a few days back, for example, which I absolutely adored and think will come to be regarded as one of the highlights of best comics in years. But . . . how many ‘Dark Knight Returns’ are published every year? I think Morrison does some interesting things with the genre, and Alan Moore’s ABC books are very good, but in terms of real critical meat that’s, what, 1 or 2% of the mainstream industries output? Most of it is stupid people in tights hitting each other... you can see why my expectations are low.)
I think anyone who sits down to write a superhero story should take a long and hard look at just what it is that makes the genre so hidebound, so calcified and almost decrepit in its mannerisms and its conventions. After so much water has been under the bridge, it seems that it almost takes a genius to find some new life in the genre, to find stories tell that need telling as superhero stories, that take advantage of those things the genre can do that no other genre can. Take the unreality, take the genre conventions and use them to tell a story that is uniquely suited to exploit these limited restrictions. It’s not impossible – but as I said in the Journal the amount of effort almost makes you think it isn’t worth the while. That’s what makes superheroes uninteresting.
If you want to write a story about saving the whales, why not just write a story about whales and not about Superman saving the whales? If you want to write a story about the inefficiencies of the criminal justice system, write a courtroom drama without men in red tights beating up ninjas. By injecting the spandex into these situations you also inject too many distracting and disorienting elements to keep your original message intact.
So many superheroes are uninteresting because they exist only to propagate trademarks. For the most part the most interesting and essential work on any given character is done by the people who create him – because the understand what he’s all about, they understand the metaphors they drive the conflict and fuel the drama. In a perfect world, Spider-Man would have ceased publishing when Ditko left – because while there’s been some nice work done in the intervening years none of it has held a candle to Lee & Ditko’s in terms of the sheer simplicity and unadorned efficiency of their model. Spider-Man is basically uninteresting to me now because I’ve read Lee & Ditko’s – everything else might as well be fanfic because they’ll never be able to capture that spark again.
Man, where was I?
Oh yeah. I recognize that a great many people can wax poetic about superheroes, can write some pretty interesting stuff on the genre when they want to – but most of it just seems kinda silly to me. I mean, if you want to talk about how great Mozart sounds on the kazoo, you’re perfectly entitled to so, but I’m also entitled to think you’re rather missing the point. Mozart on kazoos might be fun for a lark, but its just kinda silly on the face of it. Even if 90% of all the records in the store became kazoo music, it wouldn’t change the fact that the kazoo is an instrument with an extremely limited range. There are a few things that the kazoo can do, true, but the kazoo just looks silly trying to play Mozart or Back or the Beatles or even Slipknot. And just because everyone is playing the kazoo doesn’t mean that I’m going to change my own standards to reflect this – I’m no Objectivist but I’ll stand by my own perceptions in the face of popular scorn for as long as you care to scorn me.
And as for “Animal Man”, well, I quite liked the series. But again, I find myself wondering what someone as talented as Morrison could have done if he hadn’t had to channel what was, at its core, a very sweet and honest story about personal loss through the filter of a third-tier DC superhero book. I’m not going to say that he should have written a straight autobiographical story or anything like that – but it seems odd that he should have used that particular platform for that particular message. But, then again, Morrison’s work has always managed to use the unique aspects of the genre to tell interesting stories – as I said – so I can’t really complain about that part of it.
No, the parts of “Animal Man” that didn’t quite ring true were, from a craft standpoint, the parts where Morrison’s reach clearly exceeded his grasp. Its all in the eye of the beholder – one man’s jejune is another man’s profound – but, for instance, the part in the last issue with the flashlights on the hills just seemed forced and manipulative. Purely from a mechanical standpoint, it was an obvious and derivative mechanism that made me cringe when I read it the first time. By now, though, Morrison has mostly outgrown these types of gaffes, but it still reads like the work of a young man – a talented, passionate and worldly young man – but still a young man.

And that, as they say, is that – I really had no desire to write this much but that’s pretty much the story of my life. Maybe I’ll post a review or something tomorrow – maybe not – but at least you can expect the linkblogging to resume on Monday.

New Review For All The Kiddies
Thanks to the good folks at the Poopsheet I've got a new review up here - this time I take a stab at the new Dani Siciliano CD, "Likes..." from !K7 Records. (Scroll down past the first review, its the second down).
I have decided that the linkblogging will be a weekday thing, and the weekends will be time to catch up on other stuff - including, just maybe, some more reviews. Also got a couple letters to answer but I don't want to rush it so I might not get to them immediately. We'll see.

Notable Links for 20/02
Man, I sincerely hope nothing of interest happened today in the comics world and that everyone is still just talking about the freakin' Green Hornet... I gotta get up at the crack of dawn and drive up to New Hampshire 'cause Anne's got a doctor's appointment. I'd really like to not linger on this one...
* The biggest news of the week appears to be a major shake up at Image: Erik Larsen has replaced Jim Valentino as Image's publisher. Although looks could be deceiving, this appears to have been a bloodless coup instigated by Marc Silvestri. Larsen's stated aim is to steer the Image brand back to more mainstream projects without leaving behind any of the indie luster they've garnered in recent years. This would be in addition to perhaps smoothing over some of the more contentious issues of the past few years (ie, the fact that Image refuses to accept advertising from toy companies that aren't McFarlane Toys - the main reason for Image losing the Masters of the Universe titles and certainly a source of stress with their GI Joe licensees). Perhaps this signifies that the lucrative Masters will soon be returning to the Image banner after an unsuccessful stay at Crossgen? Food for thought. If this is the case, best of luck to Larsen in negotiating that, since obviously the main obstacle would be Mr. Toybox himself.
In any event, there's little doubt what precipitated this shake-up: Image just isn't the player that it was and wants to be, and everyone knows it. They were looking at a decidedly dim future just a short while ago - publishing a torpid selection of stale crap from Top Cow and the Spawn brand, in addition to a diverse and critically-acclaimed but increasingly small-potatoes list of independent titles. They're going to have to make some hard choices to get that new-car shine back on the Image "I", because by now there's a whole generation of comics readers who can't remember a time when Spawn wasn't the worst title on the racks and who probably don't even know that Jim Lee and Rob Liefeld co-founded the company. Its going to be hard - and if Larsen has any intention of making good on these goals he's going to have to confront McFarlane and Silvestri on their own turf. I don't envy him this challenge.
But, it must be said that in this crazy world of comics Erik Larsen is about as close to The Real Deal as you're likely to get - if there's anyone who can turn the Good Ship Image back into a Big Three player instead of just the also-ran its become, its him. And here's hoping Jim Valentino gets to spend some more time at his drawing board... he's more than earned it, I'd think.

* There's some big industry news in Malaysia, as the Pelangi Publishing Group looks to expand their business abroad and into China and Indonesia as early as this year. Why does this matter? Pelangi is the licensee for both DC comics and Disney publishing in that neck of the woods. An influx of DC and Disney books into mainland China could potentially be a huge boost to comics in the region considering just how monstrously big the Chinese market is, at least in potential. However - two caveats - the article does not specifiy whether or not Pelangi will be the sole licensee for these properties in China and Indonesia, and also, no mention is made of whether or not Pelangi's Disney license includes comics publishing. Does Disney already have a comics licensee in China? Good question. Anyway, this might turn out to be a boon to DC, or it might not effect them at all, depending on whether or not they have a prior licensee in China. Link courtesy of The Edge.
* More Asian news: as I reported the other day, the long-standing cultural rifts between Korea and Japan are fast becoming a thing of the past. However, it turns out that Korean President Roh Moo-hyun is actually specifically targeting every cultural forum he can in order to rebuild and strengthen Korea's economy and media in anticipation of a greater participation in globalization. * "NCsoft(tm) Corporation (KSE: 036570.KS), the world's leading developer and publisher of online computer games and Blue King Studios announced plans today to publish a monthly comic book based on NCsoft's highly anticipated online computer game, City of Heroes(tm)." Either this article is a slow news day aberration or DC is seriously interested in playing the publicity game - a game that Marvel had all to itself until very recently. * Finally, I would like to take a moment to talk about this. As a freelancer for the Journal, I received this very same e-mail about two days ago. It says basically everything you could hope to know about le Affaire George to date - and at that, a far sight more than any of us were ever "entitled" to know about what are, at the end of the day, the private workings of a private company. In most industries, stuff like this would be absolutely nothing even remotely resembling news, but in this ass-backwards world we call comics there are people who still believe there is some sort of scandal at work here. This just points to how insulated, petty and totally removed from reality many in our community actually are.
I will admit to some bias on the issue - but come on. This isn't just silly, its getting into some really nasty legal and moral gray areas. As soon as I got the e-mail, I was secretly gritting my teeth in anticipation of the inevitable leak. Not because there was anything damning or pertinant that would necessarily hurt Groth, the Journal, George or Fantagraphics, but simply because it was private correspondence. Violating the privacy and trust of personal business correspondence for no better reason than to spread gossip is just a foolish, unprofessional and downright wrong thing to do. If there was anything damning in the letter, that would be a different story - but there wasn't, not in any way shape or form, and not unless you're wearing a tinfoil hat and receiving your mental broadcasts from Dave Sim/Harlan Ellison/the Secret Society of the Illuminati. These weren't the Pentagon Papers, these weren't subpoened documents, and this is hardly a matter of pressing national security.
Please, people, let it rest. Let's give Dirk the opportunity for a clean slate without any of this nonesense.

* Finally, I would like to take a moment to talk about this. As a freelancer for the Journal, I received this very same e-mail about two days ago. It says basically everything you could hope to know about le Affaire George to date - and at that, a far sight more than any of us were ever "entitled" to know about what are, at the end of the day, the private workings of a private company. In most industries, stuff like this would be absolutely nothing even remotely resembling news, but in this ass-backwards world we call comics there are people who still believe there is some sort of scandal at work here. This just points to how insulated, petty and totally removed from reality many in our community actually are.
I will admit to some bias on the issue - but come on. This isn't just silly, its getting into some really nasty legal and moral gray areas. As soon as I got the e-mail, I was secretly gritting my teeth in anticipation of the inevitable leak. Not because there was anything damning or pertinant that would necessarily hurt Groth, the Journal, George or Fantagraphics, but simply because it was private correspondence. Violating the privacy and trust of personal business correspondence for no better reason than to spread gossip is just a foolish, unprofessional and downright wrong thing to do. If there was anything damning in the letter, that would be a different story - but there wasn't, not in any way shape or form, and not unless you're wearing a tinfoil hat and receiving your mental broadcasts from Dave Sim/Harlan Ellison/the Secret Society of the Illuminati. These weren't the Pentagon Papers, these weren't subpoened documents, and this is hardly a matter of pressing national security.
Please, people, let it rest. Let's give Dirk the opportunity for a clean slate without any of this nonesense.

There's a lot to talk about today in the news, so why do I get the sinking feeling that most everybody is just going to be talking about that new X-Men revamp that finally got leaked? Sigh.
I was thinking about possibly doing a reveiw write-up of something or other today, but this ended up taking more time tonight than I had planned. So, maybe tomorrow...
* "Late in the day on 15 February 2004, journalist Saïda Azzouz, of the daily Le Matin, and cartoonist Ali Dilem, of the daily Liberté, were taken in for questioning at the Algiers police station. No official reason was given for their detention. Police were searching for copies of a new book by Mohamed Benchicou entitled, "Bouteflika : an Algerian imposture". * In an action similar to Monday's holding action against Michigan's recent censorship statute, Arkansas judges have enacted a similar stopgap pending a similar court challenge to that state's similar Act 858, designed to prohibit the expsure of sexually-explicit material to children. The First Day Of The Rest Of Our Blogs
Well, by now the news has reverberated throughout the hallowed halls of fandom... the "Old Order Changeth" , to use a really geeky reference.
This hit me hard. Dirk's 'Journalista!' has become the focal point for so much of what is good in this here comics blogosphere . . . Hell, I think it goes without saying that if it weren't for him I wouldn't even be writing this now. I don't think I ever missed a day of 'Journalista!' from the very beginning. He wasn't the first member of our blogosphere but I'll be damned if I can think of anyone who was more important in kindling the sense of community, or more influential in terms of spreading the idea of our blogosphere's particular responsibilities.
I think the rise of 'Journalista!' mirrored a similar change of perception among the world of internet blogs in general. Somehow a critical mass was reached, the realization that these little words on our computer screens mattered in some strange way. It became more than just debating the merits of the Hulk over Thor, it became in a lot of ways a true extension, at least through 'Journalista!'s prism, of what the Journal is really about (or, at least, what I've always believed it to be about).
Its about a responsibility to the art form, to the medium; to the people who practice it and to ethical business practices in general. Its about the universality of cartooning across cultures and across continents - I know there are a lot of people who just glazed over Deppey's international links, but I think that was perhaps the most important service 'Journalista!' offered. It gave us all a little bit of context. Its about our history and our community - and not in some dippy "Team Comics!" way, but in the real sense that this is an important and vital art form we're all truly blessed to be a part of, for better or for worse.
I hope Dirk returns soon. Unfortunately, given the realities of publishing, and particularly the realities of publishing an unwieldly beast like the Journal - I remain skeptical that this will happen anytime soon. Its not all sad, though, as I am really excited about the prospect of the Journal under Dirk. If he brings the same attitude and breadth of interest to his Journal, we are in for a rare treat indeed.
Milo George will be missed. As many have pointed out, his Journal was simply wonderful, perhaps a definitive run. Mr. George sat at the helm for some truly phenomenal issues. I am upset that Anne Elizabeth Moore's run as editor is clearly underrated - she oversaw some excellent issues as well. On a more personal note, I should add that Mr. George was never anything less than an absolute prince of a fellow in my dealings with him. I only had a handful of articles printed under his stewardship, but it was a joy to work for him. It seems he was hated and derided across the land for his internet persona, and that's a shame - because the Milo who posted on tcj.com and the Milo who edited the Journal don't seem like they could possibly have been more dissimilar.
In any event, from now on I'm going to strive every day to use this meager podium to build on the high standard 'Journalista!' has already established.
I think we all should feel a great responsibility now. I know I do. Thank you, Dirk, for the example you have shown me, and thank you for the work yet to be done.

Back In The Saddle
So, as you may or may not know, its been a long stretch without any comics. For various (money-related) reasons, I've head to go without comics for the longest sustained period since I was probably five or six years old .
That said, after a prolonged absence things seem to be returning to some semblance of normalcy - meaning, I can buy comics again. At least a few - there's still a bunch of stuff I missed these past few months and will be slow to catch up on - but the process of reacclimating myself has begun.
First, I think I should say that having been without comics for so long, I return to the scene with a renewed vigor. I mean, seriously, its hard to stay excited about these things when comics become a weekly slog - more a chore than a joy. Its something I think we can all relate to in one way or another, those of us who have stayed with the medium for as long as we have.
Second, now that we're actually back to reading comics, I can get back to the business of this here comics blogosphere and start talking about comics. Herewith, I shall commence a new semi-regular feature for your gratification and edification:
X-Statix #13-18
I have never seen a once-great series "jump the shark" so succinctly and with such seeming finality.
I can remember way back - or, at least, it seems like a long time ago now - when the powers-that-be (or, were) at Marvel announced a bold new direction for one of Marvel's mainstay sub-franchises, "X-Force". Normally, like many, I wouldn't have been caught dead near something like "X-Force", but the new direction promised by the creative team of Milligan & Allred was impossibly enticing. Sure enough, I bit the hook and I was glad I did. The "All-New, All-Different" X-Force was one of the best mainstream books of the last decade, somehow managing the impossible, and using the tired superhero formula to say something, something if not new then at least interesting, about the world around us (and not just in the time-tested, ham-fisted "Your Sidekick's A Junky!" fashion).
I was excited about each new issue of "X-Force" as I hadn't been for a mainstream comic in many moons. It was damn good. I even ponied up the dough to get the inevitable hardcover collection, even though I already had everything in it - because I liked the series that much and wanted to see it in the deluxe format.
But when it made the shift to "X-Statix", something was lost. Perhaps the initial shock of the new had worn out. Perhaps the series premise was such that it couldn't really stand up to prolonged scrutiny. I don't know. For whatever reason, things just started to get "wacky", and usually when you're talking about once-good properties, "wacky" is the kiss of death.
Sure enough, that brings us to the "Back From The Dead" storyline, which I just read in one sitting.
I know all the backstory, and quite honestly I am left wondering if their original plans for the story would have made it any better. Certainly, the fact that the main thrust of the story was basically gutted before it ever saw the light of day didn't help - but if you look at the shape of the story that did see print, you don't see a lot of real room for improvement. Its sloppy, its episodic, and its cliched. It seems to actually be two or three different storylines in the place of one, with different things happening for no real reason and with no real explanation.
Suddenly, Henrietta is the Secretary of Homeland Defense. Suddenly, we discover that longstanding team members have been selling arms to Saddam Hussein. Suddenly, the story's plausibility is shredded.
It commits some of the most unpardonable sins you can possibly imagine an action comic book committing. There are whole issue that pass with the main characters sitting around debating what to do without, you know, actually doing anything. These debates serve no purpose other than to illustrate horrendously opaque plot-points. The characters, almost to a man, all break character egregiously at one or more points throughout the story - reinforcing the fact that the story was badly shoehorned and needed to be seriously rethought. Multiple characters die for no real reason other than shock value . . . which I do realize is a staple of "X-Statix" (hell, the first issue of the new "X-Force" had the whole team killed), but here it comes off as forced and desperate. There's even a Spider-Man cameo - and its so perfunctory that Spidey just sort of disappears halfway through a battle, undoubtedly confused or bored, or both. I know he he feels.
So, I think if I can say anything with any degree of certainty, its that they should have scrapped the whole idea once they figured they couldn't use Diana. I mean, seriously, this one misstep seems to have destroyed every last bit of momentum this book had. I realize that whole issues were already produced - but hey, half the books already look horrible because Allred obviously had to rush through and redraw certain passages. The fact is, this storyline is a shambling undead mess, and should serve as a cautionary message to creators everywhere: sometimes its best just to walk away, rather than putting your name on crap.
But if you squint real hard, you can at least see small glimpses of what they were going for. In particular, the last scene of the arc, featuring an undead Henrietta (Diana) confronting the president of her unnamed European country, the president who ordered her death. Its easy to substitute, in your own mind, the real intended participants - a shuffling zombie Diana confronting a cowering Queen Elizabeth. Its a powerful image, even if it doesn't exist anywhere but the readers' minds.
I didn't think the original premise of "Back From The Dead" was all that great an idea in the first place - it smacked of flop-sweat, to be honest. I was never really that upset when the inevitable announcement came that the higher-ups had quashed Diana's appearance in the story because I thought, and will continue to think, that it was a lame idea. It seemed to be transgressive merely for the sake of being transgressive, jejune instead of honestly provacative. Of course, when all is said and done, it will probably be said that this one idea was enough to kill the series.
They're supposed to be going to the Marvel Knigths imprint but will that ultimately accomplish anything? The damage is done. Momentum is destroyed and the creators have lost their bearings. Perhaps it would be best to have the concept go the way of the original Doom Patrol - ie, kill everyone. At least that would be in character.

Man, this is a dead week . . . you don’t have to see all the nothing releases I gotta sift through. Anyway, these guys are odd, sort of like one of those odd psychedelic folk bands that sprouted up in England in the late 60’s. If that’s your type of thing, have at it.
DAMAGE PLAN New Found Power (Elektra)
Damage Plan is actually one word: Damageplan. That’s about all I know about these fellows except that they’re loud.
DESCENDENTS ’Merican (EP) (Fat Wreck Chords)

EINSTÜRZENDE NEUBAUTEN Perpetuum Mobile (Mute)
OK, this is album of the week right here. Got this a little bit ago and while its not as good as Silence Is Sexy, that’s really no insult because Silence Is Sexy was a brilliant album. As it is, this is hardly a let down. It’s got moments of pure brilliance.
MELISSA ETHERIDGE Lucky (Island)
You know, its kind of cool that she’s still on Island. Most artists of her generation/position have lit out for smaller labels like Koch or Sanctuary. If she’s still moving the units, good on her.
CESARIA EVORA Club Sodade (Bluebird)
If I could have two albums of the week, this would be the second. This is just fabulous, with remixes by Carl Craig, Francois Kervorkian, Kerri Chandler, Four Hero, Senor Coconut and more. If you’re a fan of the Latin flavored house, this is as close as you can get to a “must have” disc.
MAX GRAHAM Shine (w/tracks by Junkie XL, Sander Kleinenberg and Medway) (System)
Eh. Totally uninteresting. I imagine this will be more of the same from Mr. Graham – wallpaper progressive house. Blah.
DAVID GUETTA Just a Little More Love (Astralwerks)
Now this I want to hear. David Guetta has a very good remix of David Bowie’s “Heroes” out now – it’s an awesomely cool house redub of an already unbeatable track. He’s got good taste and I expect good things from this album
JESUS AND THE DEVIL Destructive Music Resists the Oncoming Light (Fudge Sickill)
Good to see they were able to settle their differences and come together in the universal language of music.
NORAH JONES Feels Like Home (Blue Note)
Reviews have been underwhelming. Didn’t really care for the first album. I’m just glad Blue Note is still making money.

Or, she could fade back in the American Morass. You know, Robbie Williams says he’s given up on breaking America – says he enjoys the anonymity. Bet he’d be singing a different tune if Escapology had went platinum.

PAUL OAKENFOLD Greatest Remixes (Topaz)
This will be a short disc. HAHAHAHAHA
Oh, well, credit where it’s due, he may suck a great deal of the time but he’s produced a handful of pretty good remixes. He surprised us all with a boffo mix of Underworld’s “Born Slippy” just a few months ago. If there are more recent remixes than older mixes, it might just be pretty decent. Amazon tells me nothing so I couldn’t tell you. Topaz is traditionally not a big label, however, so chances are this will have been put together without his input.
PETEY PABLO Still Writing in My Diary: 2nd Entry (Jive)

Advance word on this is really good. Its sort of like an old-school butt-metal album, sorta like a parody of an old-school butt-metal album. Recommended for people who liked hearing Dave drums on the recent Queens of the Stone Age album but have wondered where his nuts went on the most recent Foo Fighters albums. Plus its got one of the greatest album covers in history:

I mean, they don’t really do many remixes, and certainly not for big-time pop stars. I figure Kylie just backed the money truck up the studio. In any event, I’m not going to complain – I’ve heard the mix and its pretty cool.

Man, this is a dead week . . . you don’t have to see all the nothing releases I gotta sift through. Anyway, these guys are odd, sort of like one of those odd psychedelic folk bands that sprouted up in England in the late 60’s. If that’s your type of thing, have at it.
DAMAGE PLAN New Found Power (Elektra)
Damage Plan is actually one word: Damageplan. That’s about all I know about these fellows except that they’re loud.
DESCENDENTS ’Merican (EP) (Fat Wreck Chords)
And speaking of loud . . .
EINSTÜRZENDE NEUBAUTEN Perpetuum Mobile (Mute)
OK, this is album of the week right here. Got this a little bit ago and while its not as good as Silence Is Sexy, that’s really no insult because Silence Is Sexy was a brilliant album. As it is, this is hardly a let down. It’s got moments of pure brilliance.
MELISSA ETHERIDGE Lucky (Island)
You know, its kind of cool that she’s still on Island. Most artists of her generation/position have lit out for smaller labels like Koch or Sanctuary. If she’s still moving the units, good on her.
CESARIA EVORA Club Sodade (Bluebird)
If I could have two albums of the week, this would be the second. This is just fabulous, with remixes by Carl Craig, Francois Kervorkian, Kerri Chandler, Four Hero, Senor Coconut and more. If you’re a fan of the Latin flavored house, this is as close as you can get to a “must have” disc.
MAX GRAHAM Shine (w/tracks by Junkie XL, Sander Kleinenberg and Medway) (System)
Eh. Totally uninteresting. I imagine this will be more of the same from Mr. Graham – wallpaper progressive house. Blah.
DAVID GUETTA Just a Little More Love (Astralwerks)
Now this I want to hear. David Guetta has a very good remix of David Bowie’s “Heroes” out now – it’s an awesomely cool house redub of an already unbeatable track. He’s got good taste and I expect good things from this album
JESUS AND THE DEVIL Destructive Music Resists the Oncoming Light (Fudge Sickill)
Good to see they were able to settle their differences and come together in the universal language of music.
NORAH JONES Feels Like Home (Blue Note)
Reviews have been underwhelming. Didn’t really care for the first album. I’m just glad Blue Note is still making money.
JUNKIE XL Radio JXL - A Broadcast from the Computerhell Cabin (two CDs) (Koch)
You know this guy: he’s the guy who did that Elvis remix – the first one. He’s got a long history of making uninspired music, perhaps his brush with fame has injected him with urgency? Or maybe not. Don’t know. We are expecting this any day now and I am mildly interested.

Again? Didn’t we just see a Keb Mo disc a few weeks ago?

This is just now being released here? This might be big, its got some catchy singles that might just be able to capitalize on the success of her last record. Or, she could fade back in the American Morass. You know, Robbie Williams says he’s given up on breaking America – says he enjoys the anonymity. Bet he’d be singing a different tune if Escapology had went platinum.
MOBB DEEP America’s Nightmare (Violator/Jive)
These guys still around? Man, I guess I’m out of the loop. Big Head Todd and now Gang Starr – its like mid-late 90’s old home week.
PAUL OAKENFOLD Greatest Remixes (Topaz)
This will be a short disc. HAHAHAHAHA
Oh, well, credit where it’s due, he may suck a great deal of the time but he’s produced a handful of pretty good remixes. He surprised us all with a boffo mix of Underworld’s “Born Slippy” just a few months ago. If there are more recent remixes than older mixes, it might just be pretty decent. Amazon tells me nothing so I couldn’t tell you. Topaz is traditionally not a big label, however, so chances are this will have been put together without his input.

TEMPEST IN A TEAPOT
If you've been following this blog at all you know how big a fan of David B's 'Epileptic' I am (my glowing review for which can still be found here). It has been announced recently (unofficially but from pretty dependable sources) that Fantagraphics will apperantly not be printing the second volume of 'Epileptic'... it will instead be handled by Pantheon. Furthermore, at the cost of slightly smaller page dimensions, Pantheon will be printing all six volumes of the story under one cover, and for an apperantly reasonable price as well. The news was broke here, with additional comments from the peanut gallery.
It seems amazing to me that anyone could possibly complain about this. Ever since I read the first Fantagraphics edition of 'Epileptic' I've lived in constant fear of the announcement that there just wouldn't be enough demand to print the second volume in the US. Eurocomics have a spotty history in America - sure, you can buy Tintin and Asterix anywhere, but mostly the stuff just doesn't sell to the fanboy-drenched direct market - or if it does sell, it sells out and stays out of print (a la Marvel/Epic's beautiful but rare Mobius album series from the late 80's).
Humanoids has done a great deal towards finally giving Europe a successful presence on American stands (as has NBM, albeit to a smaller and less specific degree), but the problem with Humanoids is that their books, while beautiful to look at, are just not the kind of things I really long to see imported. Their stuff is mostly sci-fi and fantasy. I very enthusiastically picked up the first four or five issues of "Metal Hurlant" before realizing that it was essentially the same exact book as the American "Heavy Metal", only with better paper and cardstock covers. (I think "Heavy Metal" even has the edge in chain-mail bikini babe erotica, Julie Strain notwithstanding).
So, basically, I don't see any reason why this is a bad thing, except for the fact that Fantagraphics has lost what would have been a presitgious project... but, even then, the first book of the "Complete Peanuts" is about to ship so I doubt they're in any danger of going under.
Now, if we can just get "The Nimrod" on a brisker schedule...

Essential Reading
Alan David Doane recently sat down (er, exchanged e-mail) with Dirk Deppey of Journalista! fame, and the results were predictably edifying. I would quote something pertinant, but in all honesty there's not really a damn thing I actually disagree with in there. I think both Deppey and Doane have about as much insight into this whole ball of wax as you are likely to find, and its heartening to know that there are still people out there who know and care and think about comics in an intelligent manner.
My one quibble with Deppey - and we've actually discussed this before - is his attitude towards the direct market.
Now, in theory, I don't really disagree with him - I would love to see comic shops across the nation thriving for decades to come. But, unfortunately, as it stands now that's just not going to happen. I think that the stores that do survive the impending comic retailer implosion (which is going to make the mid-90's look like a picnic) are going to be those stores that recognize the wisdom of diversifying their product and costumer bases. Right now, the percentage of the direct market that has the wherewithal to even consider such a thing is minute.
Those that see the wisdom of such a course are already doing so - transforming those dank & dingy oubliettes into bright and shiny pop-culture superstores. I think if Deppey errs on anything its the fact that there are just too many comic shops that continue to conform to the "old" model and will never reform. In ten years I think the surviving comic book stores will be an entirely different breed of animal - and I believe we might even have to stop calling them comic book stores. They're going to sell comics, of course, in whatever form they may come - and that means manga, superheroes, Fantagraphics and Humanoids. They might sell music CD's or DVD's as well, and even - gasp - RPG's or CCG's - but they're going to have to sell it all in a knowledgeable and friendly manner, in a way that doesn't make potential customers afraid that their gonna get either A) shanked by the rabid fanboys or B) lice from the rabid fanboys. I don't know if this futuristic model even qualifies as a comic book store anymore.
I saw something pretty damn amazing today. I drove up to Nashua and my wife and I spent an hour or so at the Borders therein, and I have to tell you they have a simply amazing selection of comics. The biggest comics shelf I've ever seen in a chain store - full to the brim of not just manga, but a good representation from all the mainstream publishers as well as a more than representative showing from publishers like Fantagraphics, D&Q and Pantheon. They even had a near-complete selection of Cerebus phonebooks up through "Mothers & Daughters" (missing only "Reads", oddly enough). It was all kind of mixed up and a number of the volumes looked like they had been pawed through a number of times. It was a beautiful sight for these tired eyes. If every Borders had a selection like this, the woes of our industry would be solved. Unfortunately, what I saw was undoubtedly the brainchild of an enthusiastic manager at one individual store - but its enough to give you a modicum of hope.
However, it's depressing to realize that the flip-side of that coin is that this one Borders had a better selection than 95% of the stores I've ever been in. I'm sorry, but any way you slice it that particular forecast doesn't look good.
I've said it before and I'll say it again: the comic book store has to give us a reason to shop there or we won't. Its that simple. There are many good retailers, true - but there are so many bad ones out there that I just don't have much faith in the long-term stability of the direct-market. What vestiges of the direct market that do manage to survive will probably, as I say, become almost totally unrecognizable - and thats a good thing.

New Releases For The Week of 01/27/04
So, here's the deal. Only three weeks into doing it and I hit a snag on my attempt to deliver a "New Releases" rundown for every week. Apperantly, the new releases printed on Ice Magazine for the week of 01/27/04 were actually the releases for the week of 02/03/04 - so I did this week last week. This will, of course, only add to the confusion - but because I missed it I'm going to do last week this week. Make sense? I really want this thing not to suck, people, I'm tryin' my damndest...

A. SKILLZ & KRAFTY KUTS Tricka Technology (Finger Lickin’)
I thought on first glance this was some sort of odd rap album - then I saw the label. FInger Lickin' is one of the very best breaks labels in the UK - home to Lee Coombs and the Plump DJ's, among others. Good stuff, and this sounds like it also might be good. From their Amazon.com review:
"With their influences ranging from Kraftwerk to James Brown, The Commodores to De La Soul, the album promises to be a nu-skool Hip Hop adventure. Enlisting the talents of some of the world’s best hip hop and funk artists, Tricka Technology just oozes a party-rockin’ vibe. Got this in the mail the other day, still haven't found time to pop it in and listen to it. However - if its anything like all the other great stuff we've been getting from Mush lately, it should be great. (Mush records is an odd little company that seems to have sprung up out of nowhere in the last year or so, specializing in indie hip-hop, post-rock and IDM type stuff - usually all at the same time.)

Don't know if this is actually coming out or not - be skeptical. But apperantly Bone Crusher is something of a tyro - his debut album Attenchun was pilloried and he was also apperantly sued by the people who claim to have written his one hit, "Never Scared". So, whether it comes out or not, proceed at your own risk...
J.C. CHASEZ (of *NSYNC) Schizophrenic (Jive)
Call me nuts but I am interested by this. J.C. seems to want very badly the kind of acclaim and respectibility Justin Timberlake has acquired... the fact that he sang on the Basement Jaxx's excellent Kish Kash makes me think that maybe his heart is in the right place. His first solo single had Dirt McGirt (AKA the still awesome Old Dirty Bastard) on it, for Pete's sake. I am all for good music, whoever wants to make it.
SANDRA COLLINS Perfecto Presents (two CDs) (Perfecto/Thrive)
Grrr. The gender gap in the world of professional DJs is a horrible, horrible thing... and it does not help matters that one of the most visible - if not the most visible - female DJs in the world is, from all signs, just not very good. Of course, rumors are rumors, but the kind of rumors that follow Sandra Collins make you think she must have pissed off a whole lot of people at some point... to hear the gossip mills its a rare gig she actually shows up for sober.
Of course, it doesn't help that she tries to get by on her looks. I mean, lets face it, dance music is a male dominated industry, of course it makes sence to try and gussy yourself up for the boys - but that doesn't make it any better or any less desperate. Especially when she's obviously much older than advertised - whatever happening to aging gracefully? Its people like her who help contribute to the atmosphere inside the industry that makes my wife think she's gotta be some skinny size 3 bimbo with no top on to get gigs, regardless of what she plays and how well she plays it. Ah, the music industry.

Couldn't be worse than that proggy house crap he was spinning right after he left Underworld in 2000.

Doood. Back in tha day... I remember listening to old skool Death Row (Dre & Snoop, basically) and RBX was one of the better posse member who were hanging around the Death Row studios at the time. Unfortunately, like just about everyone else at the Row, RBX just never seemed to find the right solo vehicle after early successes with cameos on other people's records. Sure, Snoop launched himself from "The Chronic" and became a cultural icon, but you don't see The Lady of Rage or the DOC with their own action figures, now do you?
REMEMBERING NEVER Women and Children Die First (Ferret)

DANI SICILIANO Dani Siciliano Likes (¡K7)
This album is great. You must go buy this album - that is my sincerest wish. If you've ever heard Matthew Herbert, you've heard Dani Siciliano - they just happen to be husband and wife, in addition to being frequent collaborators. You will like it. Maybe I'll write more on it later on in the week, because we just got it a few days ago - but its good. Trust me, please.
STARSAILOR Silence Is Easy (Capitol)
Yet another passable but unexceptional British group who are never going to sell more than 50,000 albums in the US.
STEREOLAB Margarine Eclipse (ICE #202) (Elektra)
OK, on the one hand, this album is supposed to sound almost identical to all the other Stereolab albums you've ever heard. On the other hand, they just lost keyboardist/vocalist Mary Hansen in a car wreck, so I'd say that's a damn fine achievement.
TELEFON TEL AVIV Map of What Is Effortless (Hefty)
This is also very good. I don't know if its quite the "album of the year" that some are hyping, but its still quite good.
TRIO ELÉCTRICO Echo Porcours (Stereo Deluxe)
Stereo Deluxe is another great label, one of those labels who stuff always seems to impress. Have no clue who these folks are, but if their on SD that makes me want to give them the benefit of the doubt.
VOODOO CHILD (a.k.a. Moby) Baby Monkey (V2)
As has been previously discussed, this is a very, very good album. However, did you know that the Blogosphere's own Alan David Doane is a Moby fan too? You learn something new every day - and despite what some philistines may say, Moby is definitely still on the cutting edge of cool even after all these years.
WEIRD WAR If You Can’t Beat ’Em, Bite ’Em (Drag City)

MICHELLE WILLIAMS Do You Know (Music World)
Poor Michelle Williams. As a part of Destiny's Child who is not Beyonce, she'll probably never get the attention her more flamboyant leader gets every day. She'll just have to console herself with her critically-acclaimed and very quietly released solo gospel records. Its not what you'd expect from a major music star, and I can certainly respect her for it - certainly a lot more than I ever respected Beyonce.

Looking at this album on Amazon I can't tell if there was any rhyme or reason to why they picked these particular people for this particular album - ie, I can't tell why this exists, other than to spotlight some "positive" rock messages. I'm going to assume without seeing a tracklisting that the Fatboy Slim and Moby tracks are NOT new.

So, here's the deal. Only three weeks into doing it and I hit a snag on my attempt to deliver a "New Releases" rundown for every week. Apperantly, the new releases printed on Ice Magazine for the week of 01/27/04 were actually the releases for the week of 02/03/04 - so I did this week last week. This will, of course, only add to the confusion - but because I missed it I'm going to do last week this week. Make sense? I really want this thing not to suck, people, I'm tryin' my damndest...

A. SKILLZ & KRAFTY KUTS Tricka Technology (Finger Lickin’)
I thought on first glance this was some sort of odd rap album - then I saw the label. FInger Lickin' is one of the very best breaks labels in the UK - home to Lee Coombs and the Plump DJ's, among others. Good stuff, and this sounds like it also might be good. From their Amazon.com review:
"With their influences ranging from Kraftwerk to James Brown, The Commodores to De La Soul, the album promises to be a nu-skool Hip Hop adventure. Enlisting the talents of some of the world’s best hip hop and funk artists, Tricka Technology just oozes a party-rockin’ vibe. (Mush records is an odd little company that seems to have sprung up out of nowhere in the last year or so, specializing in indie hip-hop, post-rock and IDM type stuff - usually all at the same time.)

Don't know if this is actually coming out or not - be skeptical. But apperantly Bone Crusher is something of a tyro - his debut album Attenchun was pilloried and he was also apperantly sued by the people who claim to have written his one hit, "Never Scared". So, whether it comes out or not, proceed at your own risk...
J.C. CHASEZ (of *NSYNC) Schizophrenic (Jive)
Call me nuts but I am interested by this. J.C. seems to want very badly the kind of acclaim and respectibility Justin Timberlake has acquired... the fact that he sang on the Basement Jaxx's excellent Kish Kash makes me think that maybe his heart is in the right place. His first solo single had Dirt McGirt (AKA the still awesome Old Dirty Bastard) on it, for Pete's sake. I am all for good music, whoever wants to make it.
SANDRA COLLINS Perfecto Presents (two CDs) (Perfecto/Thrive)
Grrr. The gender gap in the world of professional DJs is a horrible, horrible thing... and it does not help matters that one of the most visible - if not the most visible - female DJs in the world is, from all signs, just not very good. Of course, rumors are rumors, but the kind of rumors that follow Sandra Collins make you think she must have pissed off a whole lot of people at some point... to hear the gossip mills its a rare gig she actually shows up for sober.
Of course, it doesn't help that she tries to get by on her looks. I mean, lets face it, dance music is a male dominated industry, of course it makes sence to try and gussy yourself up for the boys - but that doesn't make it any better or any less desperate. Especially when she's obviously much older than advertised - whatever happening to aging gracefully? Its people like her who help contribute to the atmosphere inside the industry that makes my wife think she's gotta be some skinny size 3 bimbo with no top on to get gigs, regardless of what she plays and how well she plays it. Ah, the music industry.

From what I saw of the track listing, seems like this is a bit more on the tech-house, or breaks-house side of the spectrum. Couldn't be worse than that proggy house crap he was spinning right after he left Underworld in 2000.
FANTÔMAS Delirium Cordia (Ipecac)
OK, anything that could possibly be described as 'Mr. Bungle-esque', with the exception of John Zorn's 'Naked City' album, is way too messed up for me. Sorry, I prefer my cerebral cortex unmolested .

Um, what? Is this a two-CD set about how great it is to be George Foreman? I'd buy that. I'm a dedicated user of his 'lean mean fat grilling machine' or whatever - I use it for hamburgers and steaks and it rokks tha house.
